Useful facts about the best techniques for your hair transplant

Whether FUT or FUE is better suited depends very much on the individual patient

What is the difference between an FUE and an FUT hair transplant?

The main difference is the way the grafts are taken from the so-called donor area at the back of the head. With the FUE method, the grafts are removed from the donor area one by one. With the FUT method, by contrast, a narrow strip of skin is removed from the donor area. The grafts (groups of 1 to 4 hairs, also called hair follicles) are then prepared under a microscope for reimplantation in the bald areas of the scalp.

What are the advantages of an FUE hair transplant?

The treatment is more comfortable and practically painless. The healing phase after the procedure is about half as long. Patients are left with only barely visible scars from an FUE hair transplant. In addition, with FUE it is also possible to treat on two consecutive days in order to transplant a very large number of grafts in a relatively short time.

What are the disadvantages of an FUE hair transplant?

An FUE hair transplant is very labour-intensive for doctors and hair technicians. This is why the transplant is also more expensive than an FUT hair transplant. In addition, the donor area, i.e. the back of the head, has to be shaved. Because of the greater effort involved, fewer grafts can be transplanted in one day with an FUE treatment than with an FUT treatment. For women, shaving the back of the head is usually not an option, and for men with longer hair it can also be a major obstacle. The hair in the donor area must be strong so that the hair follicles are not damaged during extraction. Curly hair is also a major challenge for an FUE treatment.

What are the advantages of an FUT hair transplant?

An FUT hair transplant is somewhat less labour-intensive for doctors and their team. As a result, more grafts can be transplanted in one day. These grafts (hair follicles) can carry up to 4 individual hairs, so that the same or even better results can be achieved with somewhat lower graft numbers than with FUE treatment. A large team of 3–5 hair technicians and the specialist carry out the treatment, so that large hair transplants (up to 3,000 grafts) can be performed in a short time (5 to 6 hours).

Is an FUE treatment for women the same as an FUE treatment for men?

In many cases, an FUE treatment for women differs from a treatment for men. Women often have different needs and expectations. The following considerations often come together:

Women often expect a higher density and often wear their hair longer;
women usually do not want to shave before the treatment;
hair loss in women has different causes.

Society, and often many women themselves, expect full, thick hair. In other words, they want a fuller head of hair in which the outside world cannot tell that there is hair loss. A hair transplant always offers an improvement, but cannot guarantee a 100% restoration of natural density. It is therefore crucial to receive open, honest advice so that patients can weigh up the possibilities and their own expectations of a hair transplant against its limits. In addition, only 1 in 100 women is willing to shave her hair for a hair transplant. For this reason, at Hair Doctors we perform almost exclusively FUT hair transplants on women. This means our female patients come to Hair Doctors with long hair and also go home again with long hair after their hair transplant.

How long is the waiting time for a hair transplant?

Depending on the location and type of treatment (FUE or FUT), the waiting time for a hair transplant is 3 to 4 weeks on average.

Is a hair transplant covered by health insurance?

No, generally not. You can also finance a hair transplant at Hair Doctors simply and easily by paying in instalments (for residents of Germany), spreading the financial burden over a longer period.

Is a hair transplant also possible with tightly curled hair?

Yes, we also treat people with tightly curled hair. The transplant technique is somewhat more complex, because tightly curled hair also curls beneath the skin. Our medical team has mastered this technique for many years and can therefore also achieve good results with transplants of tightly curled hair. In some cases, we may need to take a test sample before the main procedure in order to better assess how the hair grows beneath the surface of the skin.

Might I need another hair transplant later on?

Of course, it is not a must. But your hair loss may continue – especially if you had a hair transplant at a young age. The hair transplanted by Hair Doctors will keep producing hair for the rest of your life. But the natural, untreated hair around it may continue to fall out. In such a case, it may well make sense to consider a further procedure.

What can I expect from the 1:1 consultation with no obligation at Hair Doctors?

Put simply: specific answers to all the questions you want answered before you can decide on a hair transplant. For example, you need to know whether you are suitable for a transplant, which method suits you best and how many grafts are needed for a natural result. You also need to know what it costs, what exactly you can expect and who at Hair Doctors will be involved in the treatment. Depending on the type of consultation – in person or by video – you can also get an impression of our hair clinic and meet the rest of the Hair Doctors team.
