Because hair is an important factor in beauty for women, many women suffer greatly when severe hair loss occurs. It is important to know the cause so that the right treatment method can be found.

Reasons and causes of severe hair loss in women

In women, severe hair loss is often hormonal. In such cases, the hormones oestrogen and testosterone are no longer in balance. That is why hair loss after pregnancy or after stopping the contraceptive pill is not unusual in women.

But a nutrient deficiency is also often responsible for severe hair loss in women. This often occurs when someone eats an unbalanced diet and takes in too little of certain nutrients, such as iron.

Another cause of severe hair loss in women can be a genetic predisposition. This can affect women of any age.

Is a hair transplant the solution for severe hair loss?

To find the right treatment for severe hair loss, it is first necessary to determine its cause. If the hair loss results from a deficiency of a particular nutrient, a change in diet can help.

In some cases, however, the hair thins out more and more and loses all its volume. If bald patches are already visible on the head, a hair transplant can help – provided the donor area at the back of the head is dense and stable. If that area is thinning too, a transplant often does not make sense.

How does a transplant work for severe hair loss?

In women, a hair transplant is usually carried out using the FUT method. Hair follicles are transplanted from other areas of the head to the bald areas so that hair grows there again.

In cases of severe hair loss, it often makes sense to follow up with hair therapy using your own blood.

For own-blood therapy, 8–10 ml of venous blood is taken and specially processed by the Hair Doctors specialists. The resulting blood concentrate stimulates the regeneration of the tissue around the hair follicles and promotes cell growth in the hair follicles. This is why this method is very effective for severe hair loss.

The concentrate made from your own blood is first applied on the day of the hair transplant. This is followed by an application 2–4 weeks after the hair transplant and another after 3 months.

Aftercare

If the hair was transplanted using the FUT method, the first follow-up appointment takes place after 2–3 weeks. As there is a small suture at the area of the scalp from which the hair follicles were taken, the stitches are now removed.

If you have opted for own-blood therapy, the application is repeated several times in a regular 3-month cycle.

Immediately after the transplant, you should wash your hair only with a special growth shampoo and avoid physical exertion such as sport.

What does a transplant for severe hair loss cost?

With severe hair loss, large areas may need to be covered with new hair. The costs can therefore range from €5,500 to €8,500. For residents of Germany, financing is usually also possible, so you can spread the costs over several monthly instalments. Laboratory tests as well as aftercare and follow-up appointments are already included in the costs.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from our patients

Why do women have severe hair loss after pregnancy and while breastfeeding?

Because the hormones oestrogen and testosterone are often thrown out of balance during these phases. As a result, hair growth slows down on the one hand, and on the other the hair follicles become hypersensitive, so the hair falls out.

Which doctor diagnoses severe hair loss?

Your GP can already use blood tests to find out what may be causing severe hair loss. Because of possible hormonal disorders, however, you should also be sure to consult a gynaecologist.

Can home remedies or shampoos stop or reverse severe hair loss?

If the severe hair loss is caused by a nutrient deficiency, special shampoos may help and provide some relief. Many home remedies also contain important vitamins that your hair might be lacking in the case of severe hair loss.
