A receding hairline can affect anyone. If the hair loss at the temples is hereditary, people can develop a receding hairline at a young age. A hair transplant can help here, however, by filling the temples with new, healthy hair.

Reasons and causes of hair loss with a receding hairline

Both men and women can suffer from a receding hairline, although it is much more common in men. The causes can be very similar.

In women

In women, a receding hairline is usually accompanied by thinning hair at the parting. With hereditary hair loss, the hair follicles are often very sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone. However, the hormone oestrogen produced by the body counteracts this, so that many women with a predisposition to hair loss do not notice anything.

Only when hormonal changes occur in the body does this type of hair loss become visible. This is why a receding hairline in women often appears after a pregnancy or after stopping the pill. The menopause can also cause hair loss in women.

In men

Hair loss in men at the temples is often a first sign of hereditary hair loss, which can even develop into a thinning crown. Around 60–80% of men in Germany are affected by this type of hair loss.

In men, too, a hereditary receding hairline is often caused by hypersensitivity of the hair roots to the body’s own messenger substance dihydrotestosterone.

The risk of hair loss at the temples increases with age. But a poor diet or too much stress can also lead to a receding hairline.

How does a hair transplant for a receding hairline work?

Hair transplant in women

The FUT method using the strip technique is particularly suitable for long hair, as it does not require shaving beforehand. A strip of skin previously chosen by a hair surgeon is removed, and the hair follicles to be transplanted are then obtained from it.

Once the grafts have been optimally prepared and placed in a special growth solution, they are inserted into the receding areas at the temples. A treatment with the FUT method allows around 3,000 hair follicles to be transplanted, which corresponds to around 7,500 individual hairs.

Hair transplant in men

For short hair, the FUE method can be chosen. With this hair transplant method, suitable follicles are taken from the back of the head. The donor hair has to be shaved before extraction, which is why the method is mostly used for men.

The hair follicle is extracted with a hollow needle, which is very thin and therefore leaves hardly any marks. Once the graft has been removed, it is prepared so that it can take well in its new place.

Depending on the number of follicles to be transplanted, the hair transplant takes around eight to ten hours. In this time, up to 2,600 grafts can be transplanted, which corresponds to around 6,500 individual hairs.

Aftercare after a hair transplant for a receding hairline

Whichever method you choose, directly after the procedure there will be a consultation in which you are told about all the important next steps. In the following days, wash your hair only with the stimulating shampoo from Hair Doctors.

After a few weeks, a follow-up appointment is due for both the FUE and the FUT method. If your hair was transplanted using FUT, the stitches are removed at this appointment. We also check whether the hair at the temples has taken properly and is healthy.

Avoid physical exertion such as sport during this time and allow your body some rest.

Receding hairline: hair transplant costs

A hair transplant for a receding hairline is considered a medium-sized hair transplant and costs between €3,600 and €4,800. The price already includes both the treatment and the follow-up and aftercare appointments.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from our patients

At what age do you get a receding hairline?

The risk of hair loss – and with it a receding hairline – increases with age. In women, the menopause in particular is a common trigger for a receding hairline.

Does a receding hairline grow back by itself?

If the receding hairline is caused only by a temporary iron deficiency, the hair can grow back by itself. If, however, the hair loss is hereditary, often only a hair transplant will help.

Do shampoos and home remedies help to combat a receding hairline in the long term?

If a receding hairline is due to a lack of important minerals, home remedies can help. But it is important to know that hair, once lost, can only be restored with a hair transplant.
