Hair loss in women can have various causes. As many as 34% of all women suffer from hair loss by their mid-twenties. This figure rises with age. That is surprising, because hair loss is still mostly seen as a men’s problem. Thinning hair combined with hair loss can be concealed well at first – if a woman wears her hair long, for example. But at some point this reaches its limits. And that is why many more women than generally assumed suffer from the effects of hair loss.

Reasons and causes of thinning hair

When hair becomes thinner due to hair loss, hair density decreases. This is by no means the same as having fine hair. One thing is clear: if your hair gradually becomes thinner, some form of hair loss is usually the reason. In women, it is mainly the hair at the parting that is affected – in most cases, the hair loss is hereditary. It usually appears during the menopause or with hormonal fluctuations, for example after pregnancy or after stopping the pill.

If the hair is affected not only at the parting but all over the head, this is known as diffuse hair loss. It is not necessarily hormonal, but can be the result of too much stress, a poor diet or iron deficiency.

How does a transplant work for thinning hair?

Whereas with many hair transplants the donor hair first has to be shaved, Hair Doctors uses the FUT method for transplants in thinning hair, which does not require shaving beforehand. This makes it particularly suitable for longer hair.

An expert hair surgeon first defines the area from which the hair follicles to be transplanted will be taken. A small strip of skin is then removed from this area, and Hair Doctors hair technicians separate the individual follicles from it. Each of these extracted grafts contains up to four individual hairs.

Using a special growth solution, the Hair Doctors specialists ensure that the hairs removed and later transplanted are preserved for longer and take root better. The area of skin where the hair is to be transplanted is prepared with small punctures. The follicles are then carefully inserted there.

With an FUT transplant for thinning hair, up to 3,000 grafts can be transplanted in one day, which corresponds to around 7,500 individual hairs.

Aftercare following a hair transplant for thinning hair

For the first few days after the transplant, the hair is washed only with a special shampoo that has a stimulating effect and is gentle on the freshly transplanted follicles.

With the transplant method in which a strip of skin is removed, an appointment is needed after 2–3 weeks to remove the stitches. At the same time, the progress so far is checked.

2–3 months after the treatment, the resting phase of the new hairs is over and they begin to grow. The final result is expected after about 12 months.

Costs of the transplant

Hair transplant costs for thinning hair vary depending on the work involved and the follicles to be transplanted.

If only a hairline needs correcting, you can expect a medium hair transplant, which costs around €3,600 to €4,800. A large hair transplant, which may also be necessary with diffuse hair loss and very thin hair, costs €5,500 to €8,500.

In addition to the treatment itself, the costs of course also include the outpatient stay at the clinic with a patient lounge, all the medication needed for it, and aftercare including follow-up appointments.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from our patients

What can be done about extremely thin hair?

Thin hair can be caused by hereditary hair loss. In this case, a hair transplant makes sense. However, if thin hair is due to a deficiency, taking the missing substance – iron, for example – can also make hair fuller again.

When should you see a doctor about hair loss and very thin hair?

If your hair keeps getting thinner and is falling out noticeably, you should consult a doctor – ideally a dermatologist who offers specialist hair consultations. They can determine what is causing the hair loss.

What really helps with thin hair and hair loss?

If you suffer from hair loss and your hair becomes extremely thin, you may want to consider a hair transplant, PRP own-blood therapy or scalp micropigmentation. These treat the areas most severely affected by hair loss in a very targeted way.

Are there home remedies or shampoos that can stop hair loss in thin hair?

If thin hair is caused by a poor diet, changing your diet may improve the condition of your hair. Shampoos and hair treatments tend not to bring any clearly noticeable improvement in hair loss that results from a deficiency. Unfortunately, there are no home remedies for hereditary hair loss that restore hair once it has been lost. In this case, there is no alternative to the surgical solution of a hair transplant.
