Hair often defines a woman’s beauty, which is why visible hair loss at the temples and forehead leads to insecurity and psychological distress. To treat hair loss effectively, you first need to know the cause.

Reasons and causes of hair loss at the temples and forehead in women

In most cases of hair loss at the temples and forehead in women, the cause is androgenetic alopecia. Here, the hair follicles are hypersensitive to androgens – male hormones that are, however, also present in the female body.

This hypersensitivity speeds up the hair’s life cycle. The hair follicle becomes exhausted by the excessive production of hairs and then stops forming new ones. As a result, the hair thins out more and more, especially at the temples and forehead.

This form of alopecia occurs above all with hormonal fluctuations, which is why women going through puberty or the menopause are affected more often.

How does a transplant work for hair loss at the temples and forehead?

When a hair transplant is carried out on a woman, a method that does not require shaving the donor hair beforehand is usually chosen. The so-called FUT method is therefore very well suited to hair transplants for female patients with long hair.
With this method, an area at the back of the head that is densely covered with hair is first selected. A hair surgeon then carefully removes a strip of skin and obtains the individual grafts from it. Grafts are the hair follicles that are then transplanted. Up to four individual hairs can later grow from one follicle.
Once the graft has been removed, it is placed in a special solution that helps it survive longer until it is inserted and take root better later on. The areas at the temples and forehead are prepared with a tiny hollow needle. The hair surgeon then implants the individual follicles.

Aftercare following the hair transplant

After a hair transplant, avoid physical exertion such as sport and give your body a break.

After about 2–3 weeks, you should have the stitches removed. Thanks to a special suturing technique, you will hardly see any scars after the procedure. At this appointment, the implanted follicles are checked to determine whether they are taking root well and are healthy.

Costs of a transplant at the temples and forehead

Depending on the size of the area into which new follicles are to be transplanted, hair transplant costs can vary from €3,600 to €8,500. The price already includes all follow-up and aftercare appointments as well as the treatment itself, including the anaesthetic.

The medication needed during your stay and the stay at the clinic itself are also already included.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from our patients

Does stress affect hair loss at the temples and forehead?

Stress-related hair loss is usually diffuse hair loss. This affects all the hair, not just individual areas such as the temples and forehead.

When should you see a doctor about hair loss at the temples and forehead?

If your hair is visibly thinning or you notice that a striking amount of hair is falling out, it is best to have the causes investigated by a dermatologist who offers specialist hair consultations.

Can home remedies or shampoos reverse hair loss at the temples and forehead?

If hair loss is hormonal, home remedies and shampoos cannot help. As hair loss at the temples and forehead is usually due to a hormonal imbalance, you should talk to a specialist.
